WHY THIS BOOK

Why another devotion book, even a hymn and devotion book? Why this one in particular?
One day my wife and I discussed this introduction. She mentioned that the lives of hymn writers down through the years reflected an amazing variety.
Some were pastors. Some were businessmen. Some, stay-at-home wives and mothers. Many had good health, while others suffered from blindness or depression. These were real people with real lives. They were not immune to the struggles we all face. Yet, they wrote hymns that inspire and encourage us today.
Perhaps, in some way, this book reflects a similar approach.
While traditionally, one would begin each devotion with a scripture verse, or in this case a hymn, I did not.
Instead, what you will find within these pages are very personal devotions that sprang from my own very real and imperfect life and experiences. As I wrote, I often thought how others must have shared some of the same disappointments, heartaches, and joys that I did.
Although some of these devotions were influenced by particular scripture verses, I believe all of them are, at the least, based in the truths of God’s Word and His role in each of our lives.
Finally, each thought, instead of being inspired by a hymn, actually inspired the selection of a hymn related to the subject at hand.
In this way, I want to believe that you will benefit from these hymns and devotions as they speak from a real life to a real life–no “pie in the sky by and by” here.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard Dickson has been an ordained minister of the gospel since 1982, and in church since his parents enrolled him in the Cradle Roll Department at the Sparta Baptist Church in Sparta, GA, while still in his mother's womb.
Richard earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in English at Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA (now, Georgia College and State University) in 1978. In 1982, he graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX with a Master of Church Music degree with a concentration in Piano.
He has served several churches in full-time, part-time, and interim capacities, primarily as Minister of Music, for over 40 years.
Richard was married to the late Donna Dickson for 25 years. He is currently married to Janet (Jani) Dickson since 2019. The two of them have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.

The cover pages are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. (I was extremely impressed with the quality of the book when I first held a copy in my hand.)
